A commercial building in downtown Los Angeles caught fire and exploded in the evening of May 16, injuring 11 firefighters and setting several other buildings on fire, xinhua reported.
The Los Angeles fire department said it received a report of a fire in the commercial building at 18:26 a.m.Firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the blaze when it exploded and spread to surrounding buildings. Eleven firefighters were injured in the blast.
Local television showed images of flames and huge columns of black smoke rising into the sky.The fire is now largely under control. The cause of the fire and explosion is still under investigation, the Los Angeles fire department said.
